When we started building Wamome, we made a decision early on that sounds obvious in hindsight but turned out to be genuinely radical: we decided that privacy would not be a feature. It would be a constraint — the way physics is a constraint. You don't build a bridge and then add gravity as an optional setting. You design the bridge knowing gravity exists.
Most messaging applications handle privacy differently. They build the core product — messaging, media, calls, notifications — and then layer on privacy controls afterward. You get a settings menu with toggles: "Enable end-to-end encryption," "Limit data sharing," "Opt out of analytics." The framing is clear: the default is openness, and privacy is something you select.

Why "privacy as a feature" doesn't work
The problem with privacy as an opt-in isn't ideological — it's practical. When privacy is a layer added after the core product is built, it inevitably conflicts with the product's underlying architecture. Engineers then have to make tradeoffs: this feature requires server-side access to message content; that notification system needs to read message previews; analytics require behavioral logging. Each compromise is small. Collectively, they hollow out the privacy promise entirely.
This is the pattern we see across the industry. Apps that genuinely care about privacy struggle to maintain it because their architecture wasn't designed for it. Apps that don't care just make the tradeoffs and move on. Either way, users end up with weaker protection than they were promised.
The Wamome approach was different from the beginning. Every product decision — every feature we built, every infrastructure choice we made — was filtered through a single question: does this require us to access content or data that isn't ours? If the answer was yes, we found another way, or we didn't build the feature at all.
